Add Two Numbers: what children learn

1st grade addition starts with combining two single-digit numbers — the goal is fluency, moving from counting on fingers toward instant recall of small sums.

Add Two Numbers: worked example

4 + 5 = 9

Start at 4 and count on 5 more: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. The total is 9.

Add Two Numbers: a common mistake to watch for

Kids often recount both numbers from 1 instead of "counting on" from the larger number — encourage starting at the bigger number.

Add Two Numbers: how to help at home or in class

Roll a die twice and put that many small items, like coins, in two piles. Rather than counting everything from one, point to the bigger pile, say its number, and then count the other pile on from there. Hold up fingers to track how many have been counted on. A number line on the floor with tape lets your child hop the second number. When your child counts on without starting over, begin working on doubles and number bonds.
