Comparing Numbers (<, >, =): what children learn

Comparing numbers means deciding which of two values is bigger, smaller, or whether they're the same — the symbols < and > can be remembered as an "alligator mouth" that always opens toward the bigger number.

Comparing Numbers (<, >, =): worked example

45 __ 32 >

45 is bigger than 32, so the symbol is ">" (pointing toward the smaller number, 32).

Comparing Numbers (<, >, =): a common mistake to watch for

Kids often mix up which way the < and > symbols point — the "alligator eats the bigger number" trick (the wide-open side always faces the larger value) usually fixes this quickly.

Comparing Numbers (<, >, =): how to help at home or in class

Deal two cards each from a deck with the face cards removed, or use numbered paper squares, and make two-digit numbers side by side. Players decide which number is bigger, then lay a paper symbol between them with the open mouth toward the larger number. Always check the tens digit first, and only look at ones if the tens match. When your child can explain why they looked at the tens first, try ordering three numbers.
