Measure to the Quarter Inch: what children learn
On a quarter-inch ruler the half-inch mark is taller than the quarter marks, so kids can tell them apart. They count whole inches, then count quarters, and write 2/4 as 1/2.
Measure to the Quarter Inch: worked example
A bar ends at the second small mark after the 3 inch mark. How long is the bar? 3 1/2 in
Two quarter-inch marks after 3 inches is the half-inch mark. The bar is 3 and 1/2 inches long.
Measure to the Quarter Inch: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes count the marks wrongly and write 2 1/4 when the bar ends on the half-inch mark, or write 2/4 instead of 1/2.
Measure to the Quarter Inch: how to help at home or in class
Fold a paper strip that is exactly one inch long in half, then in half again, and unfold it to see four equal parts. Use that strip to measure small items such as an eraser. Ask what two of the parts make together. When your child turns 2/4 into 1/2 without prompting, move on to other measuring tools.
