Subtract Across Two Zeros: what children learn
A whole hundred has no tens and no ones, so subtracting means trading twice: 500 becomes 4 hundreds, 9 tens, and 10 ones. Then 500 - 267 = 233.
Subtract Across Two Zeros: worked example
500 - 267 = 233
500 is 4 hundreds, 9 tens, and 10 ones. 10 - 7 = 3 ones, 9 - 6 = 3 tens, and 4 - 2 = 2 hundreds. So 500 - 267 = 233.
Subtract Across Two Zeros: a common mistake to watch for
Kids try to borrow from a zero and get stuck.
Subtract Across Two Zeros: how to help at home or in class
Before any subtracting, practise only the rewrite. On a sticky note, show a whole hundred such as 300 as 2 hundreds, 9 tens and 10 ones, then do the same with 600 and 800. When the rewrite is automatic, the column subtraction that follows is routine. Ask your child to add the answer to the amount taken away as a final check. After that, three-digit subtraction with any regrouping should feel manageable.
