Add Whole Tens: what children learn
Adding whole tens applies a single-digit addition fact at a bigger scale — "3 + 4 = 7" becomes "30 + 40 = 70" with a zero tacked onto each number.
Add Whole Tens: worked example
30 + 40 = 70
Think of it as 3 tens plus 4 tens: 3 + 4 = 7, so the answer is 7 tens, or 70.
Add Whole Tens: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes forget the trailing zero and write "7" instead of "70" — connecting it back to the single-digit fact helps this stick.
Add Whole Tens: how to help at home or in class
Use dimes if you have them, or craft sticks bundled in tens. Count out one handful of bundles and then another, and have your child name the bundle total first. Then say it as tens: four tens and two tens make six tens, which is sixty. Practice with a hundred chart by jumping down a column. When your child can add the bundles and say the new number with the zero right away, move on to adding bundles plus singles.
