Whole Tens — Missing Addend: what children learn
This combines two skills at once — whole-tens addition and missing-addend thinking — applying the same single-digit fact (like 3 + __ = 7) at a bigger scale (30 + __ = 70).
Whole Tens — Missing Addend: worked example
30 + __ = 70 40
Think of it as tens: 3 tens plus what equals 7 tens? Since 3 + 4 = 7, the missing amount is 4 tens, or 40.
Whole Tens — Missing Addend: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes forget the trailing zero and answer "4" instead of "40" — connecting it back to the single-digit fact helps this stick.
Whole Tens — Missing Addend: how to help at home or in class
Stack pretend bundles of ten, like dimes or craft sticks tied in tens, so that the number of bundles is clear. Cover some bundles with a cup and ask how many are hiding. Your child can say the problem in bundles first, such as three bundles and how many bundles make seven, then turn the answer back into a number of tens. When your child can solve missing bundles and then write the full number, try mixing in missing ones as well.
