Near Doubles: what children learn
"Near doubles" (like 6 + 7) sit right next to a memorized doubles fact — 6 + 7 is just double-6 (12) plus one more. This is a mental-math shortcut, not a new type of problem.
Near Doubles: worked example
6 + 7 = 13
6 + 7 is one more than the doubles fact 6 + 6 = 12, so 6 + 7 = 12 + 1 = 13.
Near Doubles: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes don't notice the numbers are close together and count on the slow way instead — asking "which doubles fact is this close to?" nudges them toward the shortcut.
Near Doubles: how to help at home or in class
Put two rows of counters side by side, with one row one counter longer than the other. Ask your child which double the two rows are close to, then add the extra counter. Do the same with cards drawn from a deck, flipping two and sorting them into doubles, near doubles and neither. Let your child explain which double they borrowed from. When your child spots the nearby double before reaching for fingers, try bigger sums that go past ten.
