Place Value: Tens and Ones: what children learn

Place value is the idea that a digit's position determines its value — a "4" in the tens place is worth 40, not 4. Being able to move between "4 tens + 7 ones" and "47" is the foundation for all multi-digit arithmetic.

Place Value: Tens and Ones: worked example

3 tens + 5 ones = 35

3 tens is worth 30, plus 5 ones is 5 more, so 30 + 5 = 35.

Place Value: Tens and Ones: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes write "35" as "305" (writing "30" then "5" side by side) instead of combining them — base-ten blocks help make the combining step concrete.

Place Value: Tens and Ones: how to help at home or in class

Play a digit game with two dice or playing cards. Roll or draw two digits and ask your child to make the biggest number possible, then the smallest. Have them say which digit is in the tens place and which sits in the ones place, and what each digit is really worth. Writing the digits on a simple two-column chart labeled tens and ones keeps the place values straight. When your child can explain what each digit is worth every time, try missing-part problems.
