Tens and Ones — Missing Part: what children learn
This runs the tens-and-ones skill in reverse — instead of combining tens and ones into a number, it starts from the number and asks how many tens or ones make it up.
Tens and Ones — Missing Part: worked example
35 = 3 tens + __ ones 5
35 is made of 3 tens (30) plus some ones. Since 30 + 5 = 35, the missing amount is 5 ones.
Tens and Ones — Missing Part: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes write the whole number as the answer instead of just the missing part — reminding them the tens amount is already given helps them focus on what's left.
Tens and Ones — Missing Part: how to help at home or in class
Hide some of the bundles or singles under a cup. Show the total, for instance 47, tell your child what remains visible, and let them work out what is hiding. Moving the visible tens or ones out of the whole is easy with a place-value mat. Say the problem as a story: I have 47, you can see 40, so what is under the cup? Once your child can find either missing part, expect more confidence with adding to tens.
