Add Whole Tens (3 or 4 Numbers): what children learn

Adding whole tens uses the same facts as adding ones: 3 + 4 + 2 = 9, so 30 + 40 + 20 = 90. Kids see that tens add just like ones.

Add Whole Tens (3 or 4 Numbers): worked example

30 + 40 + 20 = 90

3 + 4 + 2 = 9, so 3 tens + 4 tens + 2 tens = 9 tens, or 90.

Add Whole Tens (3 or 4 Numbers): a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes drop the zero from the answer and write 9 instead of 90.

Add Whole Tens (3 or 4 Numbers): how to help at home or in class

Write the multiples of ten from 10 to 90 on index cards, shuffle, and turn over three or four. Ask your child to say the amount in tens first, such as "five tens and two tens and one ten", and only then give the total. Saying the unit aloud keeps the zero attached to the answer. When they answer quickly and the totals pass 100, they are ready for the missing-number version.
