Array Addition Sentences: what children learn

Writing an array as an addition sentence connects the picture to repeated addition. Adding the rows gives the same total as adding the columns.

Array Addition Sentences: worked example

An array has 3 rows with 4 dots in each row. Add the rows. 4 + 4 + 4 = 12

There are 3 rows with 4 in each row, so write 4 three times. 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.

Array Addition Sentences: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes write the number of rows as the addend instead of the number in each row.

Array Addition Sentences: how to help at home or in class

Draw a small array of stars on paper and hide all but the first row under a sticky note. Your child writes the sentence for that row, lifts the note to reveal the next row, and extends the sentence one addend at a time. Then turn the page a quarter turn so the columns become rows and write a second sentence. Your child is ready to move on when both sentences are written for one picture and the totals agree.
