Repeated Addition: what children learn
Adding the same number again and again is the first step toward multiplication. Writing 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 shows that 3 groups of 4 make 12 in all.
Repeated Addition: worked example
4 + 4 + 4 = 12
There are 3 fours. 4 + 4 = 8, and 8 + 4 = 12.
Repeated Addition: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes add the number only twice, or count the addends instead of adding them.
Repeated Addition: how to help at home or in class
Pour out a handful of buttons and make three small piles of four. Slide the piles together one at a time while your child says the running total aloud: four, eight, twelve. Then change the number of piles and ask for a prediction before any adding. When your child can handle six or seven equal piles without losing the thread, and writes the whole addition sentence unprompted, you can introduce the word multiplication and the times sign.
