Line Plots: what children learn

A line plot shows measurement data on a number line, with one X for each measurement. Kids count the Xs to answer questions about how many are a certain length.

Line Plots: worked example

A line plot has 3 Xs above the number 5. How many pencils are 5 inches long? 3

Each X stands for 1 pencil, so 3 Xs mean 3 pencils.

Line Plots: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes read the number on the line instead of counting the Xs above it.

Line Plots: how to help at home or in class

Collect pencils or crayons and measure each to the nearest inch. Make a number line on masking tape or paper, and put a sticky note X above the number for each one. Ask how many are exactly 6 inches or which length has the most Xs. When your child counts the Xs above the number rather than reading the number itself, line plots are secure.
