Picture Graphs: what children learn

A picture graph shows data with rows of pictures, and each picture counts for one. Kids read it to find totals and to compare, using words like how many more.

Picture Graphs: worked example

A picture graph shows 5 cats and 3 dogs. How many more cats than dogs are there? 2

5 - 3 = 2, so there are 2 more cats.

Picture Graphs: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes add the two rows when the question asks how many more.

Picture Graphs: how to help at home or in class

Run a family vote about favorite fruits and draw one small picture for each vote in rows. Ask how many people chose each fruit, which has the most, and how many more one has than another. Hide the votes behind a flap and ask a question about the graph. When your child answers without recounting every row, move on to bar graphs.
