Subtract Tens from 2-Digit Numbers: what children learn

Subtracting whole tens from a two-digit number leaves the ones the same: 87 - 30 = 57 because 8 - 3 = 5 tens.

Subtract Tens from 2-Digit Numbers: worked example

87 - 30 = 57

Take away 3 tens: 8 - 3 = 5 tens. The ones stay 7, so the answer is 57.

Subtract Tens from 2-Digit Numbers: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes take the 30 away from the ones digit instead of the tens.

Subtract Tens from 2-Digit Numbers: how to help at home or in class

Use a hundred chart: start at 94 and slide a finger up one row for each ten taken away. Ask what changes (the row) and what stays the same (the column). Then try other starts, like 62 or 87, taking two, three or four tens in a single jump. When your child can jump up several rows at once and say the new number without counting back, they are ready for three-digit numbers.
