Subtract Tens from 3-Digit Numbers: what children learn
Subtracting tens from a three-digit number changes the tens digit, and sometimes the hundreds: 547 - 30 = 517, but 520 - 30 = 490 because a hundred is traded for 10 tens.
Subtract Tens from 3-Digit Numbers: worked example
547 - 30 = 517
Take away 3 tens: 4 - 3 = 1 ten. The hundreds and ones stay the same, so the answer is 517.
Subtract Tens from 3-Digit Numbers: a common mistake to watch for
When the tens digit is too small, kids forget to trade a hundred.
Subtract Tens from 3-Digit Numbers: how to help at home or in class
Teach a two-step mental route to the hundred. For 520 - 70, go down 20 to reach 500, then take off the other 50 to land on 450. Ask your child to say each stop aloud. Try other starts that need the route, such as 410 - 60, and ones that do not cross a hundred, to compare. When they choose the route themselves, crossing a hundred feels routine and they can try whole hundreds.
