Calendar Facts: what children learn
Students use what they know about the calendar: 7 days in a week, 12 months in a year, and the order of the days and months. They count on or back to find a day or a month.
Calendar Facts: worked example
What day is 3 days after Tuesday? Friday
Count on 3 days after Tuesday: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. The answer is Friday.
Calendar Facts: a common mistake to watch for
Kids often count Tuesday as the first day, so they land one day too early.
Calendar Facts: how to help at home or in class
Put a wall calendar on the table and move a toy car along it. Start on any day, hop forward five days, and have your child name the landing spot: five days after Monday is Saturday. Then ask how many days are in 3 weeks, which is 21. Mix in questions about months. When answers come without counting every single day, your child is ready for bigger leaps like 4 weeks.
