Draw the Time to the Quarter Hour: what children learn
Drawing the hands makes students think about where each hand belongs for a given time. They place the long hand for the minutes and then put the short hand at or near the hour number.
Draw the Time to the Quarter Hour: worked example
Draw the hands for 8:45. 8:45
The long hand points to 9 for 45 minutes. The short hand is almost at 9, since it is nearly 9 o'clock.
Draw the Time to the Quarter Hour: a common mistake to watch for
Kids often point the short hand right at the hour number even when it is 45 minutes past, instead of nearly to the next hour.
Draw the Time to the Quarter Hour: how to help at home or in class
Be the clock. Stand facing your child and use your arms as hands: both up for 12, one arm out to the side for 3. Call out a time and have your child copy it, then switch roles. Move on to drawing the hands on a paper plate. When your child puts the short hand halfway between numbers for half past without being reminded, try 5-minute times.
