Perimeter on a Grid: what children learn

On a grid, every side of a square is 1 unit long, so the perimeter is the number of unit lengths around the outline. Counting each side in turn and adding is the same as adding side lengths.

Perimeter on a Grid: worked example

A rectangle on a grid is 4 units long and 2 units wide. What is the perimeter? 12

The sides count as 4, 2, 4, and 2 units. 4 + 2 + 4 + 2 = 12, so the perimeter is 12 units.

Perimeter on a Grid: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes count the squares inside the shape instead of the unit lengths around the outside.

Perimeter on a Grid: how to help at home or in class

Draw shapes on grid paper and trace the outline with a colored pencil, dotting each unit length as you count it. Then pose a challenge: draw a different shape that also has a perimeter of 12 units. A 3 by 3 square and a 4 by 2 rectangle both work. When your child counts the lengths around the edge rather than the squares inside, missing sides are next.
