Area of Rectangles: what children learn

A rectangle with a length and a width is covered by that many rows of squares, so its area is length × width. The answer is written in square units.

Area of Rectangles: worked example

A rectangle is 6 units long and 4 units wide. What is the area in square units? 24

Multiply the length by the width: 6 × 4 = 24. The area is 24 square units.

Area of Rectangles: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes add the length and width, which gives the distance around, not the area.

Area of Rectangles: how to help at home or in class

Build a rectangle from tiles in rows, then draw it on grid paper and cover most of it with a card so only the first row and first column peek out. Your child uses a times fact to predict the total, then lifts the card to count and check. When your child reaches for multiplication on its own and writes square units, move on to finding unknown sides.
