Quadrilateral or Not: what children learn

A quadrilateral is any closed shape with 4 straight sides and 4 corners, so squares, rectangles, rhombuses and trapezoids are all quadrilaterals. Triangles, pentagons, hexagons and circles are not.

Quadrilateral or Not: worked example

Is this shape a quadrilateral? (A shape with 5 straight sides) no

The shape has 5 sides and 5 corners. A quadrilateral has exactly 4, so the answer is no.

Quadrilateral or Not: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes say yes only for squares and rectangles, but every shape with 4 straight sides is a quadrilateral.

Quadrilateral or Not: how to help at home or in class

Cut out a pile of paper shapes, including a skinny trapezoid, a kite, a tilted square, a triangle, a pentagon and one with a gap in its outline. Your child taps each side, taps each corner, and sorts them into yes and no piles. Notice together that the shape must be closed. When odd-looking four-sided shapes land in the right pile, move on to comparing squares, rectangles and rhombuses.
