Draw the Time to the Minute: what children learn
Drawing the hands is the reverse of reading a clock. Students find the minute mark first, then place the hour hand just past the hour, or close to the next hour when the time is nearly there.
Draw the Time to the Minute: worked example
Draw the hands for 8:23. 8:23
23 minutes is 4 fives and 3 more. Count 4 numbers, then 3 marks, and draw the long hand there. The short hand is a little past 8.
Draw the Time to the Minute: a common mistake to watch for
Kids often point the long hand at the 23 or at the 2 instead of counting by 5s and then by 1s.
Draw the Time to the Minute: how to help at home or in class
Make a clock from a paper plate: write 1 to 12 around the edge and add two paper arrows held in the middle with a brad. Call out a time such as 6:14 and let your child set the hands. Check that the hour hand sits just past the 6, not exactly on it. Swap and set the hands yourself for them to read. When both hands land correctly, they can move on to elapsed time.
