Tell Time to the Minute: what children learn

Third graders read an analog clock to the nearest minute by counting by 5s to the closest number and then counting on by 1s. They write the time with a colon and two digits for the minutes, like 4:07.

Tell Time to the Minute: worked example

The hour hand is just past 4. The minute hand is 2 marks past the 7. 4:37

The long hand on 7 means 35 minutes. Two more marks make 37 minutes. The short hand is just past 4, so the time is 4:37.

Tell Time to the Minute: a common mistake to watch for

Kids often read the hour hand as the next hour when the minute hand is past 30, so 4:47 turns into 5:47.

Tell Time to the Minute: how to help at home or in class

Hang an analog clock where your child sees it often and ask for the time at a few fixed moments each day, such as before dinner. Have them say it aloud by counting by 5s to the long hand and then adding single minutes. Cover any digital display nearby so they must read the hands. When they read times correctly without touching every mark, including times after half past, they can try drawing the hands.
