Time Word Problems: what children learn
Students solve stories about time: finding minutes between two clock times, adding or comparing amounts of time, and splitting or repeating equal amounts of time. Each answer is a number of minutes or hours named in the question.
Time Word Problems: worked example
Ravi starts a puzzle at 4:10. Ravi finishes at 4:45. How many minutes does it take? 35
From 4:10 to 4:30 is 20 minutes. From 4:30 to 4:45 is 15 more minutes. 20 + 15 = 35, so the puzzle takes 35 minutes.
Time Word Problems: a common mistake to watch for
Kids often write the hours and minutes as one number and subtract, which fails when the time crosses to the next hour.
Time Word Problems: how to help at home or in class
Plan a pretend Saturday on paper, with real start times for each activity. Ask three kinds of questions, mixing them up: how long did the park visit take, what time will we leave if the walk is 25 minutes, and how many minutes are in 3 half-hour shows? Your child answers in minutes or hours, as the question asks. When all three kinds feel manageable, they can try mass stories.
