Length Word Problems: what children learn

Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide lengths in everyday stories, such as cutting a ribbon or laying boards end to end. The unit stays the same all the way through the problem.

Length Word Problems: worked example

The red ribbon is 24 inches long. The blue ribbon is 18 inches long. How many inches long are they together? 42

Join the two lengths. 24 + 18 = 42, so they are 42 inches long together.

Length Word Problems: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes change the unit in the middle of a problem, or forget that the answer needs the same unit as the story.

Length Word Problems: how to help at home or in class

Measure real objects at home with a ruler or tape measure: a shelf, a book, a doorway. Make up stories from the measurements, such as laying two books end to end or cutting a strip off a piece of string. Your child writes the sentence and the answer with its unit. When they keep the unit with every number without reminders, they can try stories about time.
