Addition with Base 10 Blocks: what children learn
Adding with blocks means combining two piles — the rods from both groups together, and the cubes from both groups together — before reading off the final total. When the cubes add up to 10 or more, 10 of them make one more rod (that is regrouping).
Addition with Base 10 Blocks: worked example
Group 1: 2 tens, 3 ones. Group 2: 1 ten, 4 ones. 37
Combining the rods: 2 + 1 = 3 tens. Combining the cubes: 3 + 4 = 7 ones. Together that's 37.
Addition with Base 10 Blocks: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes add the two totals incorrectly by mixing up which cubes belong to which group — counting each group's blocks separately first, before combining, helps.
Addition with Base 10 Blocks: how to help at home or in class
Build two groups with bundled straws or pasta, one group per player. Count each group separately, then slide them together and count the tens first, then the ones. If you now have ten or more loose ones, trade them for a new ten and see how the total changes. Talking through the steps, tens together, ones together, then trade, helps your child avoid mixing up the groups. When trades happen smoothly, try adding two-digit numbers on paper.
