Counting Using Base 10 Blocks: what children learn
Each tall "tens rod" stands for 10, and each small "ones cube" stands for 1 — reading the number means counting the rods, counting the cubes, and combining them.
Counting Using Base 10 Blocks: worked example
3 tens rods and 4 ones cubes are shown. 34
3 tens rods are worth 30, plus 4 ones cubes worth 4 more, giving 30 + 4 = 34.
Counting Using Base 10 Blocks: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes count every block (rods and cubes together) as if they were all worth 1 — remind them a rod is worth 10 blocks by itself, not 1.
Counting Using Base 10 Blocks: how to help at home or in class
If you have no blocks, make your own: use dry pasta tubes taped in bundles of ten for rods and single pieces for cubes. Lay out a mix and have your child count the bundles by tens first, then continue counting the singles. Say it aloud as a count, like 10, 20, 30, 31, 32. Swap which pile gets counted first and see that the total stays the same. Once your child counts mixed groups correctly, move to regrouping.
