Breaking a Number into Tens and Ones: what children learn
This is the same picture-reading skill as "Counting Using Base 10 Blocks," but the answer asks for the tens-and-ones breakdown itself (like "3 tens, 6 ones") instead of the combined total.
Breaking a Number into Tens and Ones: worked example
2 tens rods and 7 ones cubes are shown. 2 tens, 7 ones
Counting the rods gives 2 tens, and counting the cubes gives 7 ones — so the breakdown is 2 tens, 7 ones.
Breaking a Number into Tens and Ones: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes answer with the combined number (27) instead of the tens-and-ones breakdown the instructions ask for — rereading the instruction line before answering helps.
Breaking a Number into Tens and Ones: how to help at home or in class
Write a two-digit number on a card, such as 36, and ask your child to build it with bundles of ten and loose ones. Then reverse the task: show a pile of bundles and singles and have your child write the number. Narrate with the sentence pattern tens, ones, then whole number. Pick numbers that include a zero, like 40 or 50, to show that no ones is also fine. Your child is ready for place value work when they can switch both ways.
