Longer or Shorter: what children learn

Comparing length directly — just by looking — is the first step before measuring with any unit at all. It builds the idea that "longer" and "shorter" are opposites describing the same comparison.

Longer or Shorter: worked example

Bar A stretches further across the page than Bar B. Which bar is longer, A or B? A

Bar A reaches further than Bar B, so Bar A is the longer one.

Longer or Shorter: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes judge by which bar looks "bigger" overall (thicker) rather than which one is actually longer — pointing out that only the length matters here helps.

Longer or Shorter: how to help at home or in class

Collect everyday objects like a pencil, a spoon, a shoe and a toy car. Line them up with their left ends touching a starting line on the table, because comparing is only fair when the objects begin at the same place. Ask which one is longer and which one is shorter, and check by laying one beside the other. Try objects that look similar. When your child lines objects up properly, move on to putting more than two in order.
