Taller or Shorter: what children learn

This is the same comparison skill as "Longer or Shorter," turned sideways — kids compare height instead of length, which matters since taller/shorter is how we usually describe people and standing objects.

Taller or Shorter: worked example

Bar A reaches higher than Bar B. Which bar is taller, A or B? A

Bar A reaches higher up than Bar B, so Bar A is the taller one.

Taller or Shorter: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes compare how wide a bar looks instead of how high it reaches — reminding them to look only at the top edge of each bar helps.

Taller or Shorter: how to help at home or in class

Stand cups, books or blocks in a row on a flat table. Compare two things at a time and ask which is taller. Then compare the kids themselves, standing back to back. Point out that something thin can still be tall, and that all things being measured need the same bottom starting line. When your child can compare any pair and explain what to look at, try putting three or more in order from shortest to tallest.
