Order 3 Objects by Length: what children learn

Ordering three lengths at once means comparing every bar against every other bar, not just one pair — the same "compare everything, then sequence it" skill used for ordering numbers, applied to length.

Order 3 Objects by Length: worked example

Bar A is medium, Bar B is shortest, and Bar C is longest. B, A, C

Ordering from shortest to longest: B is shortest, A is in the middle, and C is longest.

Order 3 Objects by Length: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes order by the bars' label letters (A, B, C) instead of their actual lengths — reminding them to look only at the bars themselves, not the labels, keeps the comparison honest.

Order 3 Objects by Length: how to help at home or in class

Cut paper strips of four or five different lengths and mix them up. Your child lines the strips up from shortest to longest with their left ends together, then you swap two strips and ask what is wrong. Try again from longest to shortest. Use words like longest, shortest and in between. Once your child can order up to five strips and describe the order, you can introduce measuring with units like paper clips.
