Counting by 10s: what children learn
Counting by 10s is the fastest of the early skip-counting patterns and connects directly to place value — each jump of 10 just increases the tens digit by one.
Counting by 10s: worked example
40, 50, __, 70, 80 60
Each number is 10 more than the last, so the missing number is 50 + 10 = 60.
Counting by 10s: a common mistake to watch for
Kids occasionally miscount when jumping by 10 near a tricky boundary (like from 97 to 107) — remembering that only the tens digit changes, and the ones digit stays the same, catches this quickly.
Counting by 10s: how to help at home or in class
Put ten pennies, buttons or dry beans into small cups until you have several cups. Touch each cup and say the next number in the pattern, 10, 20, 30, and so on. Whisper the ones digit and say the tens digit loudly to hear the pattern. Then ask what comes after 50 without the cups. Once your child can say the tens fluently up to 100, adding whole tens is a natural next step.
