Ordinal Numbers: what children learn

Ordinal numbers ("1st, 2nd, 3rd...") describe position or order in a sequence, unlike cardinal numbers ("1, 2, 3...") which describe quantity — both are everyday ways of using numbers.

Ordinal Numbers: worked example

4th = fourth

The ordinal numeral "4th" is written out as the word "fourth."

Ordinal Numbers: a common mistake to watch for

Kids often forget the special spellings for "first," "second," and "third" and instead write "oneth," "twoth," or "threeth" — these three are the ones worth memorizing by sight.

Ordinal Numbers: how to help at home or in class

Line up five stuffed animals or toy cars and ask questions: who is first, who is third, who is last? Then change the line and ask again so your child must look at the position rather than the toy. Have your child direct a short race and announce the finishing order. When your child can name positions up to tenth and also write the short forms such as 4th, add positions in longer lines.
