Numbers and Number Words: what children learn

Reading and writing number words connects the symbol "7" to the word "seven" — both represent the same quantity, and kids need to recognize numbers in either form since both show up in real reading.

Numbers and Number Words: worked example

14 = fourteen

The digit 14 is written out as the word "fourteen."

Numbers and Number Words: a common mistake to watch for

The teens (13-19) are the most commonly misspelled — kids often mix up "thirteen" and "thirty" or "fourteen" and "forty" since they sound similar.

Numbers and Number Words: how to help at home or in class

Make a set of index cards, one with a numeral and one with its word, and play matching or memory with them. Add a few cards each day, saving the teens and the tens for last. Say each word aloud while pointing at the numeral, and notice the ending sounds: teen versus ty. When your child can match every pair without hesitating and spell a few from memory, move on to counting up and back through the numbers.
