Fact Families: what children learn

A "fact family" is the set of three numbers connected by addition and subtraction (like 3, 4, and 7) — seeing all four related equations together cements that addition and subtraction are two sides of the same relationship.

Fact Families: worked example

Write the fact family for 3, 4, and 7. 3 + 4 = 7, 4 + 3 = 7, 7 - 3 = 4, 7 - 4 = 3

The same three numbers combine into two addition facts and two subtraction facts.

Fact Families: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes write the same fact twice instead of finding all four distinct equations — checking off addition and subtraction separately (two of each) helps catch this.

Fact Families: how to help at home or in class

Draw a triangle with the largest number at the top and the two smaller numbers at the bottom corners. Pick a trio like 4, 6 and 10 and have your child write every sentence that uses all three, two adding and two subtracting. Cover one corner and ask for the hidden number. Create trios with dice or cards. Once your child can write the whole family and say how the facts are connected, move to subtracting within 20.

What is on these Fact Families worksheets

This set has 15 different worksheets for 1st grade, with 5 questions on each and a matching answer key for every sheet. The instruction printed on each worksheet is: “Write all four facts in the fact family.”

Example questions like the ones on these worksheets, with their answers:

  • Write the fact family for 12, 8, and 20.12 + 8 = 20, 8 + 12 = 20, 20 - 12 = 8, 20 - 8 = 12
  • Write the fact family for 10, 4, and 14.10 + 4 = 14, 4 + 10 = 14, 14 - 10 = 4, 14 - 4 = 10
  • Write the fact family for 12, 3, and 15.12 + 3 = 15, 3 + 12 = 15, 15 - 12 = 3, 15 - 3 = 12
  • Write the fact family for 11, 2, and 13.11 + 2 = 13, 2 + 11 = 13, 13 - 11 = 2, 13 - 2 = 11
  • Write the fact family for 17, 3, and 20.17 + 3 = 20, 3 + 17 = 20, 20 - 17 = 3, 20 - 3 = 17
