Subtract Whole Tens: what children learn

Working only with whole tens (10, 20, 30…) lets kids apply their single-digit subtraction facts to a bigger scale — "7 - 3 = 4" becomes "70 - 30 = 40" with a zero tacked on.

Subtract Whole Tens: worked example

70 - 30 = 40

Think of it as 7 tens minus 3 tens: 7 - 3 = 4, so the answer is 4 tens, or 40.

Subtract Whole Tens: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes forget the trailing zero and write "4" instead of "40" — connecting it explicitly back to the single-digit fact helps this stick.

Subtract Whole Tens: how to help at home or in class

Gather bundles of ten, such as dimes or craft sticks tied together, and place seven in a row. Remove three bundles and count what is left, saying it as tens first and then as a number. Compare with the same story using single objects to show the pattern. Count backward by tens on a hundred chart, moving up one row each time. When your child can name the new number without recounting, mix whole tens with missing numbers.
