Single-Digit Subtraction: what children learn
Single-digit subtraction is the inverse of the single-digit addition facts kids just built fluency with — the same number pairs, worked backward.
Single-Digit Subtraction: worked example
8 - 3 = 5
Start at 8 and count back 3: 7, 6, 5. The answer is 5.
Single-Digit Subtraction: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes count back one too many or too few steps — touching each number while counting back helps avoid off-by-one errors.
Single-Digit Subtraction: how to help at home or in class
Set out a small group of toys, say ten, and have your child take some away while counting what is left. Make up short stories, like seven cookies and you eat three, and let your child act them out. Try counting back on a number line, touching each number as you go. Compare with counting what is left in the cup. When counting back is accurate and quick, move on to bigger numbers within 20.
