Add Tens to 3-Digit Numbers: what children learn

Adding tens to a three-digit number changes the tens digit, and sometimes the hundreds too. For 347 + 30 = 377 only the tens change, but 380 + 40 = 420 crosses a hundred.

Add Tens to 3-Digit Numbers: worked example

347 + 30 = 377

Add 3 tens to 4 tens: 4 + 3 = 7 tens. The hundreds and ones stay the same, so the answer is 377.

Add Tens to 3-Digit Numbers: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes change the ones digit instead of the tens digit.

Add Tens to 3-Digit Numbers: how to help at home or in class

Draw a place-value chart with hundreds, tens and ones columns and write a three-digit number in it using digit cards. Slide extra tens into the tens column one at a time and watch that digit climb. When it passes 9 tens, ask what happens: ten tens turn into a new hundred. Try crossings such as 270 + 60. Your child is ready to move on when they can predict which digits stay unchanged before they start.
