Add a 3-Digit and a 1-Digit Number: what children learn
Adding a one-digit number to a three-digit number only changes the ones, unless the ones add to 10 or more and a ten (or even a hundred) is carried.
Add a 3-Digit and a 1-Digit Number: worked example
347 + 8 = 355
7 + 8 = 15 ones: write 5 and carry 1 ten. 4 + 1 = 5 tens. So 347 + 8 = 355.
Add a 3-Digit and a 1-Digit Number: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes line the 1-digit number up under the hundreds instead of the ones.
Add a 3-Digit and a 1-Digit Number: how to help at home or in class
Write a three-digit number such as 596 on a card and flip a small number card to add. Teach the make-the-next-ten trick: 596 + 7 means 596 + 4 = 600, then 3 more. Watch how the tens and hundreds digits change when the ones pass 9. Practise a handful each day aloud, then confirm on paper. Your child is ready for adding two three-digit numbers when the trick comes quickly and the digits line up on paper.
