Add 3-Digit Numbers (No Regrouping): what children learn

With no regrouping, each column adds to less than 10, so the digits can be added one column at a time from the ones to the hundreds.

Add 3-Digit Numbers (No Regrouping): worked example

243 + 135 = 378

3 + 5 = 8 ones, 4 + 3 = 7 tens, and 2 + 1 = 3 hundreds. So 243 + 135 = 378.

Add 3-Digit Numbers (No Regrouping): a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes misalign the columns when the numbers have different digits.

Add 3-Digit Numbers (No Regrouping): how to help at home or in class

Give your child three colored pencils and write each place in its own color: ones in one, tens in another, hundreds in a third. The colors keep columns apart even when numbers are close in size. Then check by estimating: round 412 and 356 to 400 and 400, so the answer should be near 800. When estimates and answers agree on most of a page, they are ready to meet problems where a column makes ten or more.
