Compare Money Amounts: what children learn
Students find the value of each amount, adding coins when needed, and then compare using the symbols for less than, greater than, and equal to. Comparing dollars and cents uses the same place value ideas as comparing numbers.
Compare Money Amounts: worked example
2 quarters + 1 dime __ 65¢ <
2 quarters and 1 dime are worth 50 + 10 = 60. 60¢ is less than 65¢, so write <.
Compare Money Amounts: a common mistake to watch for
Kids often compare the number of coins instead of the value, so they think 5 pennies are worth more than 1 dime.
Compare Money Amounts: how to help at home or in class
Ask which cup is worth more. Fill two cups with real coins, for example 1 quarter in one and 2 dimes and 1 nickel in the other, which are equal at 25 cents. Then change one cup so that 3 dimes face the 1 quarter, which is 30 cents against 25 cents. Your child counts each cup, then picks the sign. When counting comes before guessing, try money word problems.
