Count Coins: Pennies, Nickels, and Dimes: what children learn

Students add coins of different values by skip counting by 10s and 5s and then counting on by 1s. Starting with the biggest coin makes the total easier to keep track of.

Count Coins: Pennies, Nickels, and Dimes: worked example

3 dimes + 2 nickels + 4 pennies = 44¢

3 dimes are 30¢, 2 nickels are 10¢, and 4 pennies are 4¢. 30 + 10 + 4 = 44, so the total is 44¢.

Count Coins: Pennies, Nickels, and Dimes: a common mistake to watch for

Kids often count each coin as 1 no matter what it is worth, so a dime and a nickel become 2¢ instead of 15¢.

Count Coins: Pennies, Nickels, and Dimes: how to help at home or in class

Pour a small cup of real coins and have your child sort them into three piles, largest value first. Try 2 dimes, 3 nickels, and 1 penny: count 10, 20, then 25, 30, 35, then 36. Say each running total aloud as a coin lands. Once your child can give the total with no mistakes and no touching coins twice, move on to quarters.
