Money in Words to Numbers: what children learn
Students translate money words into symbols: amounts under a dollar use the cent sign, and amounts with dollars use a dollar sign, a dot, and two digits for the cents. This links number names to place value.
Money in Words to Numbers: worked example
three dollars and fifteen cents = $3.15
Three dollars is 3. Fifteen cents is .15. Put them together to get $3.15.
Money in Words to Numbers: a common mistake to watch for
Kids often write 5 cents after the dot as .5 instead of .05, which changes the amount.
Money in Words to Numbers: how to help at home or in class
Do a short dictation. Say an amount aloud, such as seven dollars and nine cents, and have your child write it on a whiteboard. Draw a small dot in the middle first and remind your child that dollars go on the left and cents on the right. Trade places and let your child dictate to you. When two-digit cents come out right every time, try the reverse: numbers to words.
