Skip Counting by 100s: what children learn

Counting by 100s from any number shows that only the hundreds place changes. It supports the idea that 10 tens make 100.

Skip Counting by 100s: worked example

237, 337, __, 537, 637 437

Each number is 100 more than the last. 337 + 100 = 437.

Skip Counting by 100s: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes change the tens or ones digit instead of the hundreds digit.

Skip Counting by 100s: how to help at home or in class

Cut ten index cards and write 100 on each, or use play money. Start with a number card like 237, then lay down one hundred card at a time while your child says the new total: 337, 437, 537. Watch which digit never changes. Ask what would happen after ten hundred cards. When your child says only the hundreds digit moves, skip counting by 2s fits next.
