Subtract from Whole Tens: what children learn

A whole ten has no ones, so subtracting a one-digit number means trading 1 ten for 10 ones. For 50 - 7, trade to get 4 tens and 10 ones, then 10 - 7 = 3, so the answer is 43.

Subtract from Whole Tens: worked example

50 - 7 = 43

Trade 1 ten for 10 ones: 4 tens and 10 ones. 10 - 7 = 3 ones. 4 tens and 3 ones is 43.

Subtract from Whole Tens: a common mistake to watch for

Kids often subtract the smaller digit from the larger one and write 57 instead of 43.

Subtract from Whole Tens: how to help at home or in class

Bundle ten straws with rubber bands and make 40 as four bundles. Ask your child to take away 6: there are no loose straws, so one bundle must be undone into ten singles first. Seeing the straws spill out makes the trade real. Count what is left, three bundles and four singles, and write it. They are ready to move on when they reach for the trade on their own and keep the tens digit one smaller.
