Draw a Line Plot: what children learn

To make a line plot, kids find each measurement on the number line and draw one X above its mark. When the same length shows up again, the new X goes on top of the first one.

Draw a Line Plot: worked example

Pencil lengths: 1 1/2, 2, 2, 2 1/4 1 X at 1 1/2, 2 Xs at 2, 1 X at 2 1/4

The length 2 shows up twice, so two Xs are stacked above 2.

Draw a Line Plot: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes put a measurement like 2 1/4 over the whole number 2, or forget to stack repeated lengths.

Draw a Line Plot: how to help at home or in class

Measure ten leaves or pencils to the nearest half inch and write each length in a list. Draw the number line, then cross off each entry as its X is placed, stacking repeats. Finish by counting Xs and comparing with the list to make sure they match. When your child never loses an item and stacks repeated lengths neatly, the data unit is complete.
