Color Shapes to Show Fractions: what children learn
This runs "parts of a whole" in reverse: given a fraction, the child decides how many of the equal parts to color. The shape is already cut into the number of parts named by the denominator.
Color Shapes to Show Fractions: worked example
Color 3/8 of the shape. (The shape is split into 8 equal parts.) 3/8
The bottom number 8 matches the 8 equal parts. The top number 3 tells you to color 3 of them.
Color Shapes to Show Fractions: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes color the number of parts shown by the bottom number instead of the top number.
Color Shapes to Show Fractions: how to help at home or in class
Fold paper strips into different numbers of sections, then name a fraction and let your child color to match. Swap roles: you color a strip while they name the fraction, checking that they count the whole strip first. A neat test is asking for 3/8 and then coloring the remaining part of the same strip. They should find it is 5/8 and that the two parts fill the strip exactly. When coloring comes quickly and correctly, introduce groups of objects.
