Equal Parts: what children learn

Before a fraction can describe a shape, the child sees that the shape is cut into a number of parts that are the same size. That count becomes the denominator of every fraction built from the shape.

Equal Parts: worked example

A circle is cut into equal slices. The picture shows 6 slices. How many equal parts? 6

Count the slices, not the lines. There are 6 slices of the same size.

Equal Parts: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes count the lines instead of the parts, which can throw the count off.

Equal Parts: how to help at home or in class

Cut a square of paper into pieces, some equal and some unequal, and mix them up. Your child sorts the fair cuts from the unfair ones and explains how they know, perhaps by stacking pieces on top of each other. Ask what would happen if two people shared the pieces and one got the biggest one. Once they reliably spot unequal pieces and count the parts instead of the lines, they can start cutting shapes themselves.
