Fractions of a Group: what children learn

A fraction can describe part of a group of separate objects, not only one shape cut into pieces. The denominator is the number of objects in the whole group and the numerator is how many are shaded.

Fractions of a Group: worked example

A group has 6 shapes, and 5 of them are shaded. What fraction of the shapes are shaded? 5/6

There are 6 shapes in the whole group, so the bottom number is 6. 5 are shaded, so the top number is 5.

Fractions of a Group: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes count only the shaded shapes for both numbers instead of using the whole group on the bottom.

Fractions of a Group: how to help at home or in class

Pile up a handful of everyday objects, such as socks, coins or crayons, and sort them by a feature like color. Ask what fraction of the pile has that feature, and have your child say how many objects are in the whole pile before answering. Add or remove one object and ask again, so they watch the bottom number change. When they handle piles of different sizes confidently, they can check whether a single shape is cut into equal parts.
