Compare Fractions: Same Numerator: what children learn
When two fractions have the same numerator, the one with the smaller denominator has bigger parts, so it is the greater fraction. This is the opposite of what many children expect at first.
Compare Fractions: Same Numerator: worked example
2/3 __ 2/4 >
Both fractions have 2 parts. Thirds are bigger than fourths, so 2/3 is greater than 2/4.
Compare Fractions: Same Numerator: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes think the fraction with the bigger bottom number is bigger, so they pick 2/4 over 2/3.
Compare Fractions: Same Numerator: how to help at home or in class
Cut two identical paper rectangles, one into 3 equal pieces and the other into 4, and take 2 pieces from each. Ask your child which pile is larger and let them lay the pieces side by side to prove it. Repeat with halves against eighths. Seeing how much bigger a piece becomes when fewer pieces share the whole makes the idea stick. When they predict the larger fraction without cutting, they are ready for model comparisons.
